InterfaceManagement is the discipline of planning, documenting, and controlling the interfaces between system elements, subsystems, suppliers, and external partners to ensure that data, signals, or physical connections between parts are compatible and that information can be exchanged reliably. Interfaces can be electrical, mechanical, software API-based, data-schema driven, or service-oriented.

The primary objectives are to minimize integration risk, manage the impact of changes, maintain traceability from requirements to delivered interfaces, and enable interoperable operation across the system lifecycle. It covers identifying interfaces, defining interface requirements, specifying data formats and communication protocols, timing and sequencing constraints, and establishing ownership and governance.

Key activities include identifying and cataloging interfaces, producing Interface Control Documents (ICDs) or interface control drawings, developing interface requirements specifications, modeling interface behavior, and implementing an interface change control process. Verification and validation of interfaces, along with configuration management, are integral to ensuring that interfaces remain aligned with overall system goals.

Governance is typically provided by an Interface Control Board or Interface Control Authority, which approves changes, resolves conflicts, and ensures traceability. Common artifacts include ICDs, an interface catalog, interface requirements specifications, data dictionaries, data mappings, and API contracts.

Applications span complex engineering programs in aerospace, defense, automotive, and large information technology systems where multiple teams or vendors contribute to a common product. Benefits include reduced rework, clearer responsibility boundaries, and improved interoperability, while challenges involve coordination across organizations, version control, and maintaining up-to-date interface definitions.
