IdealWidth is a design concept describing the target width of a block of text or content in a layout, chosen to optimize readability, legibility, and visual balance. It is not a fixed property of a system but a guideline that depends on typography, screen size, and user context. In typographic practice, the length of a line—measured in characters, words, or visual width—strongly influences reading speed and comprehension.

Practical guidelines commonly place the comfortable line length for body text in the range of about 50 to 75 characters per line, with many designers aiming for roughly 60–70 characters. On modern displays this often corresponds to a content width of about 600–900 pixels for typical body text, though the exact value depends on font choice, font size, and line height. To make this adaptable, designers frequently express idealWidth in relative units, such as the number of characters (ch) or ems, so the measure scales with text size.

In responsive design, the ideal width may be implemented as a maximum width for the text container, combined with automatic centering, so the measure remains near the target as the viewport changes. Accessibility considerations include avoiding excessively long lines for readers with cognitive or visual impairments, ensuring adequate contrast, and providing sufficient line height and spacing.

Because typography and reading contexts vary widely, there is no universal ideal width. Real-world applications adjust idealWidth to language, content type, device, and user preferences, often testing and tuning for readability metrics and user feedback.
