A hatband is a decorative band around the crown of a hat, typically positioned just above the brim. It is often removable, allowing wearers to customize a hat’s appearance without altering its structure. Hatbands vary widely in material, width, and ornamentation, and may be made from grosgrain or satin ribbon, silk, velvet, leather, fabric, or straw.

Common purposes include decoration, style signaling, and sometimes subtle functional notes such as concealing a seam or sweatband edge. Decorative elements frequently found on hatbands include buckles, conchos, beads, embroidery, feathers, and woven patterns. In many dress styles, bands are chosen to match or contrast with clothing, while in specific genres such as Western wear they may feature elaborate conchos, metal accents, or turquoise inlays.

Styles and examples vary by hat type. Panama hats often use a simple contrasting ribbon, fedoras and bowlers may employ a slim grosgrain band, and cowboy hats commonly use wider bands with decorative accents. Culturally, hatbands have appeared across regions and eras, serving as indicators of fashion, tradition, or ceremonial significance in some contexts.

Care and maintenance depend on materials. Fabric or ribbon bands can usually be spot-cleaned or brushed, while leather bands may require conditioning and gentle cleaning. When cleaning the hat itself, some wearers remove the band to prevent damage, especially for delicate fabrics.
