Ornamentation is the decoration added to objects, buildings, or spaces to enhance appearance, convey cultural meaning, or express identity without altering their essential function. Ornament appears as surface patterns, reliefs and moldings, inlays, gilding, painting, embroidery, and other applied motifs. It spans media including architecture, sculpture, ceramics, metalwork, textiles, and graphic arts, and in music it can refer to melodic figures that decorate a line.

In architecture and the decorative arts, common devices include friezes and cornices, capitals and tracery, carving of vegetal and geometric motifs, and the use of applied ornament such as marquetry, damascene, and filigree. Materials range from stone and wood to metal, ceramic glazes, and textiles. Technological advances—from casting and repoussé to 3D printing—have broadened what can be ornamented and how.

Ornament often carries symbolic or social meaning, signaling status, affiliation, or beliefs. It also functions to frame or space experience, guide movement, or create visual narrative. Across cultures, styles emphasize different priorities: classical and Renaissance motifs draw on naturalistic plant forms; Islamic and East Asian patterns favor geometric, vegetal, or calligraphic rhythms; Baroque and Rococo celebrate exuberant, sculptural richness. The modernist critique of ornament, notably in Adolf Loos’s statement that ornament is a crime, challenged its primacy in design, influencing movements toward restraint.

Today ornament remains dynamic: designers combine traditional motifs with new technologies and strategies, using digital design, parametric tools, and sustainable materials to integrate decoration with structure and meaning while respecting context and function.
