Genus Psittacus refers to a small group of large African parrots in the order Psittaciformes. In current taxonomic treatments it is placed in the family Psittacidae, subfamily Psittacinae; some classifications use a broader arrangement. The genus name derives from the Latin psittacus, meaning parrot, and the genus was established by Linnaeus in 1758. The type species is Psittacus erithacus.

Species and taxonomy: The genus includes two widely recognized species: Psittacus erithacus, the African grey parrot, and Psittacus timneh, the Timneh parrot. In some authorities Timneh is treated as a subspecies, Psittacus erithacus timneh, rather than as a separate species.

Description: Psittacus erithacus is a large gray parrot with a bright red tail. Psittacus timneh is smaller and darker gray, with a maroon tail and a horn-colored beak. Both possess strong, curved bills and zygodactyl feet adapted for grasping and climbing, and both are known for their capacity for vocal mimicry.

Distribution and habitat: Both taxa are native to Africa, spanning West to Central Africa. They typically inhabit tropical forests, woodland edges, and savannas near water, often using tree cavities for nesting and roosting.

Behavior and diet: They are highly social birds, forming bonded pairs and larger flocks. They have high cognitive abilities and are capable of complex vocalizations. Their diet includes seeds, fruits, nuts, and other vegetation.

Reproduction: Nesting occurs in tree cavities. Clutch size commonly ranges from 2 to 5 eggs, with an incubation period around 28 days and fledging after approximately 11 to 14 weeks.

Conservation: The African grey parrot is threatened in the wild by habitat loss and capture for the pet trade, with significant declines in many areas. Taxonomic differences influence the perceived status of Timneh populations; in general, wild populations face pressures from trade and habitat change.
