Gelinlik is the Turkish term for a wedding dress worn by brides during nuptial ceremonies in Turkey and among Turkish communities abroad. The word gelinlik derives from gelin, meaning bride, with the suffix -lik, forming a noun that roughly translates to “bride dress.” In contemporary Turkey, gelinliks are typically white or ivory, reflecting Western bridal fashion, though some brides choose other colors for personal or cultural reasons.

Modern gelinlik designs often feature fabrics such as satin, silk, lace, and tulle, and they come in a range of silhouettes, including A-line, ball gown, mermaid, and sheath styles. Sleeves may be long or short, and necklines range from high to plunging. The dress is commonly accompanied by a veil (duvak) and other accessories, such as a train, beading, or embroidery.

Historically, Turkish bridal attire varied by region. While the gelinlik has become the standard in most urban and contemporary weddings, rural and some regional ceremonies preserve traditional costumes such as the bindallı, a heavily embroidered, ornate wedding robe worn by brides in certain parts of Turkey. The modern gelinlik style largely reflects Western fashion trends introduced in the 20th century, with local variations in fabric, ornamentation, and modesty.

Selection and care: Brides typically purchase or rent gelinliks through bridal houses or designers; fittings are scheduled in the weeks leading to the ceremony. After the wedding, the dress is commonly preserved for storage or used as a family heirloom, requiring professional cleaning and proper storage to avoid damage.
