Fever-reducing refers to therapies and practices used to lower body temperature when fever occurs, or to ease fever-related discomfort. Fever-reducing treatment is not always necessary, since fever can be part of the body's immune response to infection; the need for intervention depends on age, symptoms, and underlying health conditions.

Pharmacologic fever reducers fall mainly into two classes: acetaminophen (paracetamol) and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen and naproxen. These agents reduce fever by different mechanisms but both help restore a normal body temperature and relieve associated symptoms like headache or muscle aches. Acetaminophen primarily acts on prostaglandin synthesis in the brain, while NSAIDs inhibit cyclooxygenase enzymes that promote prostaglandin production and inflammation.

Acetaminophen is commonly used for fever and mild to moderate pain and is often preferred when NSAIDs are unsuitable. It is generally well tolerated but can cause severe liver injury if overdosed. It should be used with caution in people with liver disease and avoided in excess and with significant alcohol use.

NSAIDs reduce fever and inflammation but may irritate the stomach, affect kidney function, and carry bleeding risks. They should be used cautiously in people with peptic ulcers, kidney disease, or certain cardiovascular conditions, and are generally avoided in late pregnancy. Aspirin is usually avoided in children and teens with viral infections due to the risk of Reye syndrome.

Non-drug measures such as adequate hydration, a comfortable room temperature, light clothing, and tepid sponging can accompany pharmacologic therapy and help relieve fever-related discomfort. Fever management should consider age, risk factors, and symptom severity; fever is not always harmful, and treatment is individualized. Always follow product labeling or clinician guidance and avoid combining multiple products containing the same active ingredient.
