Estucos are plaster-based coatings applied to walls and ceilings, primarily for exterior facades but also used indoors. The term is the plural of estuco in Spanish and is closely aligned with the English word stucco. Traditional estucos are cementitious or lime-based mixtures that harden into a durable, weather-resistant surface, while contemporary versions may include polymers or acrylic additives to improve flexibility and adhesion.

Common formulations include lime stucco, cementitious stucco, and lime-cement mixtures. Lime-based estucos rely on hydraulic or non-hydraulic lime binders and often require longer curing. Cementitious systems use Portland cement with aggregates, while modern versions may incorporate polymer modifiers to enhance adhesion, water resistance, and color retention.

Installation typically follows a layered application. A scratch coat provides keying for subsequent layers, a brown coat adds strength and thickness, and a finish coat supplies the final texture and color. Exterior stucco installations may include moisture management features such as control joints, weep screeds, and proper flashing to mitigate water intrusion. Some modern systems are "synthetic stucco" or EIFS, which use foam insulation and polymer-based finishes rather than traditional cementitious stucco.

Estucos have ancient roots in the Mediterranean and were widely used in Roman, Moorish, and later Spanish and Mexican architectures. They became common in many parts of the world, especially in regions with dry climates where the finish helps regulate moisture and solar heat. In the United States and other countries, stucco remains a popular exterior finish for its fire resistance and aesthetic flexibility.

Advantages of estucos include durability, ventilation with a breathable finish, and a long service life when properly installed. Drawbacks include susceptibility to cracking and moisture-related damage if water is not properly managed. Regular inspection, sealing, painting or elastomeric coatings, and timely repairs help extend performance.
