Emulating refers to the process of reproducing the behavior of one computer system or component on another, allowing software or hardware designed for one platform to run in a different environment. In computing, emulation translates or mimics the guest system’s instructions, timing, and peripherals so that the host system can provide the same functional results. This is distinct from virtualization, where the guest system runs largely native on hosted hardware; emulation often involves instruction translation and peripheral modeling to achieve compatibility.

Common forms of emulation include system or full-system emulation, where an entire guest machine, its CPU, memory, and devices, is emulated to run a separate operating system; instruction-level or API-level emulation, which targets specific instruction sets or software interfaces; and hardware or peripheral emulation, which recreates input/output devices, graphics, storage, and other components. Emulation can be implemented via interpretation, dynamic binary translation (including just-in-time compilation), or recompilation, with performance often enhanced by hardware-assisted acceleration in modern systems.

Applications of emulation include video game preservation and playability across generations of consoles, running legacy software on modern hardware, cross-platform development and testing, and academic research in computer architecture and software preservation. Well-known projects include QEMU for general system emulation, DOSBox for MS-DOS applications, MAME for arcade hardware, Dolphin for GameCube and Wii, and PCSX2 for PlayStation 2.

Limitations and considerations involve performance overhead, potential accuracy vs. speed trade-offs, and legal aspects related to licensing and copyright, particularly for proprietary firmware or copyrighted game software. Emulation remains a key tool for preservation, accessibility, and experimentation in computing.
