Instructionlevel refers to the granularity at which a computer system executes and reasons about operations. In computing, the term is most commonly associated with instruction-level parallelism (ILP), the potential to perform more than one operation per clock cycle by overlapping the execution of instructions. At this level the basic units are machine instructions or micro-operations, as opposed to function calls, loops, or entire programs. In formal writing, the concept is usually described as instruction level or instruction-level; the concatenated form instructionlevel is uncommon outside of specific identifiers or filenames.

Instruction-level parallelism describes how much work can be overlapped within a single processor core. Hardware techniques such as pipelining, superscalar architectures, out-of-order execution, and register renaming, along with speculative execution, are used to increase ILP. The goal is to keep execution units busy and raise instructions per cycle (IPC). However, dependencies between instructions—data dependencies, control dependencies from branches, and resource conflicts—limit the amount of ILP that can be realized.

Compilers also target the instruction level by reordering instructions, scheduling, and register allocation to expose ILP for the processor. The practical limits of ILP have been a long-standing topic; while aggressive ILP can be found in many modern CPUs, gains are tempered by memory latency, cache behavior, branch mispredictions, and the overhead of speculative paths.

Today, instruction-level considerations remain central to CPU design and performance analysis, and they are typically contrasted with higher-level forms of parallelism such as thread-level and data-level approaches, as well as with broader architectural strategies like simultaneous multithreading and many-core designs.
