Emotion processing (also encountered as emotionprocessing in some texts) is the series of cognitive and neural operations by which organisms perceive, interpret, and respond to emotionally salient information from the external world or the body. It encompasses the detection of emotional cues, appraisal of their significance, generation of subjective feelings, and subsequent regulation or expression of emotion.

In humans, emotion processing relies on a distributed network. Subcortical structures such as the amygdala enable rapid, automatic detection of emotionally relevant stimuli, particularly threat. Cortical regions including the prefrontal cortex, orbitofrontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, and insula support appraisal, regulation, interoception, and integration with memory. The processing can follow a fast, automatic "low-road" pathway and a slower, reflective "high-road" pathway, allowing both immediate reactions and context-dependent responses.

Measurement and clinical relevance: researchers study emotion processing with psychophysiological measures (skin conductance, heart rate, pupil dilation), neuroimaging (fMRI, EEG), and behavioral tasks. Alterations in processing appear in several conditions, including autism spectrum disorder, mood and anxiety disorders, and PTSD, often involving impaired emotion perception, misinterpretation of cues, or maladaptive regulation. Emotion regulation strategies, such as cognitive reappraisal or suppression, influence outcomes and are central to many therapies, including CBT and DBT.

Computational or artificial emotion processing, a field within affective computing, aims to detect and interpret humans' emotions from multimodal data—text, speech, facial expressions, and physiological signals—and to respond appropriately. Approaches use discrete emotion categories or dimensional models (valence, arousal). Challenges include ambiguity, context dependence, cultural variation, and privacy concerns; applications span customer service, mental health support, and human–computer interaction.

Emotion processing is a broad interdisciplinary concept linking neuroscience, psychology, and computer science, with ongoing research into the neural mechanisms, developmental aspects, clinical interventions, and ethical considerations around emotion-aware technologies.
