Eläintenkoulutus, or animal training, is the process of teaching animals to perform specific behaviors through various methods. The core principle behind most modern animal training is positive reinforcement, which involves rewarding desired behaviors to increase their likelihood of repetition.

Positive reinforcement techniques often utilize treats, praise, toys, or other motivators that the animal finds rewarding. This approach focuses on building a strong bond between the animal and the trainer and encourages cooperation. Other methods, such as clicker training, use a distinct sound to mark the exact moment a desired behavior occurs, followed by a reward. This precise timing helps the animal understand what action earned the reinforcement.

Historically, animal training sometimes involved aversive methods, which rely on punishment or discomfort to discourage unwanted behaviors. However, ethical considerations and research into animal welfare have led to a widespread shift towards more humane and effective positive reinforcement-based training.

Animal training is applied in numerous contexts. Pet owners train dogs for basic obedience, house training, and social skills. In zoos and aquariums, trainers work with animals for husbandry purposes, such as voluntary medical examinations, and for educational demonstrations. Working animals, like police dogs, service animals for people with disabilities, and search and rescue dogs, undergo extensive training to perform critical tasks that benefit humans. The effectiveness of animal training depends on consistency, patience, understanding the animal's species-specific needs and motivations, and adapting techniques to the individual animal.
