Cheet is a term most often associated with the cheetah, a large African wild cat also found in parts of Iran. The cheetah’s scientific name is Acinonyx jubatus, and it is the sole living species in the genus Acinonyx. The spelling cheet is typically a misspelling or informal variant; in formal writing, cheetah is preferred.

Description and adaptations: Cheetahs have a slender, muscular body, a small rounded head, long legs, and a long tail that helps with balance at high speeds. They weigh roughly 21 to 72 kilograms, depending on sex and region. Their distinctive black tear marks run from the eyes to the mouth. A key adaptation is their speed: cheetahs can accelerate quickly and reach speeds around 60 to 70 mph (97 to 113 km/h) in short bursts, covering distances up to about 500 meters. They possess non-retractable claws that provide traction during sprinting and a highly flexible spine that allows greater extension during acceleration.

Habitat and behavior: Cheetahs inhabit open savannas, grasslands, and light woodlands where visibility and space aid hunting. They are generally solitary or found in small groups, with males forming coalitions and females living more independently and rearing cubs on their own. Their hunting strategy relies on stealthy approaches and explosive chases toward prey such as gazelles and other small to medium ungulates.

Diet, reproduction, and conservation: Cheetahs hunt primarily small to medium ungulates. After a gestation of about 90 to 95 days, females give birth to litters typically containing 2 to 5 cubs. The species is listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN; the Asiatic cheetah’s subspecies is Critically Endangered. Major threats include habitat loss, prey depletion, and human-wildlife conflict. Conservation measures include protected areas, habitat restoration, anti-poaching efforts, and captive breeding and reintroduction programs.
