Checkerboarding is a visual pattern composed of equal, contrasting squares arranged in an evenly spaced grid, typically in two colors such as black and white. The arrangement resembles a chessboard and is used as a decorative motif as well as a functional pattern for tiling, signage, and graphics.

In design and architecture, checkerboarding provides high contrast and rhythm, used in floor tiling, textiles, wallpapers, and consumer packaging. Variations include different color pairs, nonuniform square sizes, or partial grids that create a more dynamic or retro aesthetic. The pattern also appears in heraldry and art, where it can symbolize balance or duality.

In computer graphics and digital media, checkerboarding describes a rendering or upscaling approach that fills alternating blocks of an image while other blocks are left unresolved. This technique reduces computational load and bandwidth, with the intent of progressively refining the image; it can become visible when data is missing or when a display presents placeholders during streaming or real-time rendering.

The term also appears in everyday culture through the iconic checkered flag of motorsports, which signals the race finish and has contributed to the pattern’s recognizability in popular imagery. While not a separate technique, checkerboard motifs are commonly used in branding and signaling due to their high-contrast visibility.
