Charakteryzacja is the set of techniques used to transform an actor’s appearance to fit a character. It encompasses makeup, prosthetics, wigs, body paint, scars, aging effects, and related costuming elements, and is employed in theatre, film, television, photography, and live events to create convincing characters or disguises.

Practitioners, often called charakteryzatorzy or makeup artists, design and implement the look using cosmetics, prosthetic appliances made of latex, silicone or polyurethane, airbrushing, shading and weathering techniques, as well as hair work and contact lenses. Prosthetics are molded to the actor’s face, applied and blended with the skin, and finished to match lighting and texture. The repertoire ranges from simple alterations to extensive transformations. Safety and hygiene are important, including patch tests for allergies and proper removal and skin care after use.

A typical workflow includes concept development, reference gathering and measurements, sculpting and molding of prosthetics, casting and fitting of appliances, painting and blending, and on-set application and maintenance. The charakteryzator collaborates with directors, costume designers, lighting and sound teams, and the actor to achieve the desired effect, while considering comfort and moveability during performance.

Historically, charakteryzacja evolved from stage makeup and mask work, expanding with new materials and techniques in the 20th century. This plus innovations in lighting, camera sensitivity, and safety standards has broadened its scope to include aging, monster makeup, disguise, and character identity, both in live performance and in media productions.
