Bottomset refers to a sedimentary facies associated with river-delta systems. Bottomset beds are the distal, low-energy deposits laid down in relatively deep water beyond the active delta front. They lie seaward of the delta slope and are typically characterized by very fine-grained material, such as clay and silt, often with interbedded fine sand. The beds tend to be laterally continuous and nearly horizontal, recording slow settling of suspended sediments deposited from outward-flowing river plumes.

Formation causes and characteristics: Bottomset deposition occurs in quieter, deeper water where the energy is insufficient to move fine particles as bedload. Sediment reaching these depths settles through suspension over long periods, producing fine-grained, laminated sequences. While conditions are generally low energy, bottomset layers can be reworked by bottom currents or turbidity flows, especially during high-energy events. Over geological time, prodelta and bottomset deposits may be buried by progressively younger deltaic sediments as the delta progrades.

Significance and use: In stratigraphy, bottomset beds help identify distal deltaic sequences and provide information about past water depth, sediment supply, and basin-side processes. They commonly serve as low-permeability seals in sedimentary basins and can preserve fossils that record offshore or delta-proximal environments. Recognizing bottomset beds, along with topset and foreset deposits, aids in reconstructing the architecture and evolution of delta systems.
