Reconstructing is the process of restoring a form, structure, or state that has been damaged, degraded, or removed, by inferring missing information from the available evidence. The goal is to produce a plausible and verifiable representation of an original object, event, or scene, rather than to recreate exact reality.

Reconstruction spans disciplines and scales. In the physical realm, reconstruction includes architectural restoration, monument rebuilding, and archaeological reconstruction of artifacts from fragments. In the digital and imaging domains, reconstruction refers to building 3D models or volumes from incomplete or indirect measurements, as in computed tomography (CT) reconstruction, seismic imaging, photogrammetry, and laser scanning. In historical and forensic contexts, reconstruction uses archival records, eyewitness accounts, and physical evidence to infer past configurations or appearances.

Common methods include data collection and preprocessing, alignment and calibration, modeling and interpolation, and iterative refinement. Algorithms may be analytical or iterative and often employ regularization or probabilistic inference to deal with incomplete data and noise. Uncertainty is a central concern, and results are typically presented with confidence estimates and documentation of assumptions.

Applications include archaeological artifact reconstruction, restoration of damaged buildings, medical imaging to visualize internal structures, cultural heritage digitization, and forensic facial reconstruction.

Ethical and practical considerations include authenticity, provenance, and the risk of introducing artefacts; decisions about reconstruction should document methods, uncertainties, and degrees of alteration from the original.
