Facies refers to a body of rock with specific characteristics that reflect a particular depositional environment or process. The concept emphasizes that different environments produce distinct rock attributes, such as lithology, texture, fossil content, sedimentary structures, and geochemical signatures. Facies is used as a descriptive unit (lithofacies, biofacies, chemo-facies) and as a genetic concept to interpret formation processes. Lithofacies describes physical aspects of rocks (sandstone, shale, limestone) and their textural features; biofacies describes the fossil assemblage; chemo-facies conveys chemical precipitates like evaporites or carbonate cements.

In practice, facies are recognized by systematic descriptions and often mapped laterally; facies changes reflect lateral shifts in depositional environments and, over time, vertical successions reflect changes in sea level, climate, or sediment supply. Walther's law of facies states that the vertical sequence of facies in one location mirrors the lateral facies distribution in a depositional basin.

Facies analysis is central to stratigraphy and petroleum geology. By integrating sedimentology, paleontology, and geochemistry, scientists reconstruct past environments such as deltas, shorefaces, reefs, or deep-sea basins, and establish facies models for exploration. Fossil content or sedimentary structures help distinguish, for example, channel sandstones, deltaic muds, shelf carbonates, or pelagic clays. In carbonate settings, carbonate ramp or platform facies reflect carbonate production and water depth.

The term also appears in metamorphism as metamorphic facies, but in sedimentary geology facies primarily denote environment-forced variations within and across rock units rather than fixed rock types.
