Depositional is an adjective related to deposition, the process by which material is laid down or accumulates in a space. In geology, sedimentology, and related disciplines, it describes the formation, properties, and context of sedimentary deposits formed by transport, precipitation, or biological activity. The term emphasizes the act of deposition rather than subsequent alteration or erosion.

Depositional environments include fluvial (rivers), deltaic, lacustrine (lakes), coastal and shoreline, reefal, shallow- and deep-marine settings, and aeolian (wind-blown) dunes. The energy of the environment, grain size, and chemistry govern the type of deposit. Depositional rocks are typically classified as clastic, formed from weathered and transported fragments, or chemical/biochemical, formed by precipitation of minerals from solution. Common depositional features include bedding and laminations, cross-bedding in dunes and deltaic beds, graded bedding from turbidity flows, ripple marks, and fossil-rich laminations.

In stratigraphy and basin analysis, depositional processes and facies track past environments, climate, and sea-level changes. Recognizing depositional sequences helps reconstruct changes over time and predict rock properties for resources, groundwater, and environmental studies. Depositional history also influences diagenesis and the ultimate mechanical and chemical properties of sedimentary rocks.
