Low permeability is a property of a material that resists the flow of fluids through its pores or fractures. It is commonly quantified by the hydraulic conductivity (k) or intrinsic permeability, measured in units such as meters per second or darcies. Permeability differs from porosity; a material can have relatively high porosity yet low permeability if pore spaces are poorly connected.

What determines low permeability includes pore size distribution, pore throat constriction, mineralogy, and the degree of cementation or compaction. Fine-grained materials like clay and shale typically exhibit very low permeability due to tiny, tortuous pathways and strong electrochemical interactions that hinder water movement. Low-permeability materials may also be anisotropic, transmitting fluids more readily in certain directions due to layering or fracture networks.

Low-permeability materials play key roles in natural systems and engineering. In geology, aquitards or aquicludes restrict vertical groundwater flow and help confine aquifers. In engineering, compacted clay liners and natural clay formations are used as barriers in landfills and waste containment to limit contaminant migration. Conversely, in resource extraction, low permeability can complicate fluid delivery, prompting techniques to enhance flow, such as fracturing in oil and gas reservoirs or thermal methods in geothermal systems.

Measurement and ranges: hydraulic conductivity can vary from less than 10^-12 m/s in clays to 10^-3 m/s in coarse sands. Permeability is influenced by temperature, pressure, and chemical conditions, and must be interpreted alongside porosity, grain size, and connectivity to assess fluid flow behavior in a given material.
