Duties of an accompanist include rehearsing with the soloist, following tempo, dynamics, and phrasing, and coordinating entrances with conductors or other musicians. The accompanist must be sensitive to the soloist's style and interpretation, adjust the accompaniment accordingly, and maintain appropriate balance, tone, and timing. They often provide cues for entrances and endings, may transpose or adapt repertoire for the performer, and must be able to sight-read unfamiliar scores.

Skills and training typically emphasize piano performance and collaborative playing, with extensive repertoire across historical periods, languages for vocal works, and strong sight-reading abilities. A successful accompanist combines technical proficiency with strong communication, collaborative listening, and the ability to respond quickly to a performer’s decisions.

Context and career: many accompanists work as freelancers or staff musicians for conservatories, universities, orchestras, choirs, or theatres. In contemporary usage, the term collaborative pianist is frequently used to emphasize partnership with the soloist rather than mere support. Historically, keyboard players in earlier ensembles served as continuo players, providing harmonic and rhythmic support.
