In jazz, a soloist improvises over a fixed chord progression and may switch ensembles between choruses. In popular music and musical theater, soloists might sing or play lead roles in songs or numbers, taking the spotlight for a passage or entire piece.

Becoming a professional soloist typically involves extensive training at conservatories or music schools, mastering a core repertoire, and developing performance and audition experience. Solos are often showcased in recitals, competitions, or festival appearances, and a soloist may work with a variety of accompanists and ensembles across engagements.
