An audition is a formal or informal performance used to evaluate a performer for a role, position, or opportunity in theatre, film, television, music, dance, or other performing arts. Auditions assess vocal or acting ability, physical presence, movement, timing, and chemistry with other performers. They may also test a performer’s suitability for a specific character, ensemble, or technical requirement.

Auditions take place in several formats, including live presentations before a casting panel, taped submissions, or online/remote auditions. Common types include open auditions, where anyone may try out, and closed or invited auditions, by invitation only. In many productions, actors perform a prepared piece such as a monologue, song, or dance excerpt; in others, they may do cold reading from a script or a read-through with the director. For film and TV, screen tests or chemistry reads with potential co-stars are sometimes used.

The audition process typically involves submitting materials (resume, headshot, reel or audition footage), preparing chosen pieces, and performing before a casting director and creative team. Afterward, performers may receive a callback for a second audition, and later a final audition or screen test before casting is announced.

Preparation and etiquette are important: select material appropriate to the role and time constraints, know the piece well, arrive on time, follow instructions, and conduct oneself professionally. Accessibility, fair casting practices, and clear communication about expectations are increasingly emphasized. Outcomes range from casting to rejection, with many auditions serving as practice or exposure for a performer.
