Zhardware

Zhardware is a modular hardware platform designed to enable rapid development of embedded systems, combining a central core with swappable peripheral modules connected through a standardized interface known as the Z-Interconnect. The platform emphasizes openness and interoperability in developer and academic communities.

The core concept is a Core Module containing a processor, memory, and boot firmware. Peripheral Modules provide input/output, sensors, communication interfaces, and accelerators. Modules attach via the Z-Interconnect, a multi-signal bus with power rails, data channels, and control lines that supports hot swapping and scalable configurations.

Zhardware defines modular form factors, such as base boards and extension cards, with a common mechanical footprint and unified power distribution. Each module carries an identification tag and firmware that negotiates capabilities at startup, enabling automatic software stack configuration.

The ecosystem favors open hardware practices. Reference designs, schematics, and design files are shared under permissive licenses. Toolchains exist for C/C++ firmware, with open-source compilers and debugging suites; compatible IDEs support device drivers, a hardware abstraction layer, and optional FPGA-accelerated paths.

Development activity includes academia, maker communities, and early industry pilots. The initiative targets lowering barriers to hardware prototyping, promoting vendor interoperability, and enhancing education in electronics and embedded systems.
