Washlets

A washlet is a toilet seat or seat attachment that incorporates a bidet function, providing a point-of-use water spray for cleansing after using the toilet. The term originated as a brand name from Toto, a Japanese bathroom fixtures manufacturer, but it is commonly used today to describe a range of similar products from various brands. Most washlets include a cleansing nozzle that extends and retracts, delivering a controlled water jet. Many models also offer a heated seat, adjustable water temperature and pressure, and different spray patterns or nozzles for rear and feminine cleansing.

In addition to cleansing, washlets often provide other amenities. A warm-air dryer, deodorizing features, and a nozzle self-cleaning function before and after use are common. Control interfaces vary from side panels to remote controls, allowing users to adjust settings such as water temperature, spray position, and energy-saving modes. Some units are integrated directly into the toilet bowl, while others are aftermarket seats or attachments that retrofit existing toilets. Most require an electrical outlet near the toilet and a water supply line, with some models offering dual-voltage options for international use.

Historically, Toto introduced the Washlet in the 1980s, and the concept quickly gained popularity in Japan, where high-tech bathroom fixtures are common. Over time, washlets and similar bidet seats spread to other regions, including Europe and North America. Market adoption varies by region, influenced by cultural preferences, plumbing standards, and perceptions of hygiene and maintenance.

Maintenance generally involves regular cleaning of the nozzle, the seat, and exterior surfaces, following manufacturer guidelines. Users should avoid abrasive cleaners on plastics and ensure proper electrical safety, especially in humid bathroom environments.
