Effectiveness depends on clean water droplets, abrasion resistance, and proper droplet behavior; oily soils or dusty environments may impair performance.

Active self-cleaning uses catalysts or energy to break down contaminants. Photocatalytic self-cleaning, commonly based on titanium dioxide under ultraviolet light, generates reactive species that oxidize organics on contact. Dopants or modifications aim to extend activation to visible light. Other approaches include electrochemical or enzymatic cleaning on specialized coatings.

Applications include self-cleaning glass and tiles, solar panels, textiles, automotive coatings, and industrial equipment. In windows, self-cleaning coatings can reduce maintenance and water spots; on solar farms, they help minimize soiling losses; in textiles, they can resist staining and staining-related cleaning.

Limitations include dependence on light exposure and environmental conditions, soil type, durability, and cost. Potential environmental concerns arise from nanoparticle use and coating wear. Ongoing research seeks more durable, versatile, and non-toxic self-cleaning materials with broader light activation and improved real-world performance.
