It aims to create structures that can be reconfigured or relocated to meet shifting programs, occupancies, and urban conditions, while emphasizing energy efficiency, material circularity, and long-term resilience.

Origin and terminology for wakabuilding are informal and largely found in design discourse and speculative literature. The term has appeared in multiple online and academic sources since the 2010s, with no single authoritative origin. Some commentators associate the name with mobility and adaptability, reflecting the idea that buildings can “move” or change configuration over their lifespans, though usage remains provisional and evolving.

Key principles of wakabuilding include modular components designed for rapid assembly and disassembly, reconfigurable interiors, and a lifecycle-oriented approach to materials and systems. The concept integrates passive design strategies, climate-responsive envelopes, and sensor-driven controls to optimize energy use. It also emphasizes data-informed decision making, iterative testing, and a preference for designs that minimize waste through prefabrication and standardization.

Techniques and tools commonly associated with wakabuilding involve cross-laminated timber or other modular framing systems, standardized modular units, and digital fabrication.
