Venitusnõrkus

Venitusnõrkus, also known as venous insufficiency, is a medical condition characterized by the impaired return of blood from the legs to the heart. This often occurs when the valves within the veins, which are responsible for preventing blood from flowing backward, become weakened or damaged. As a result, blood can pool in the leg veins, leading to increased pressure and a range of symptoms.

The prevalence of venitusnõrkus increases with age and is more common in women. Risk factors include a family history of venous disease, obesity, prolonged periods of standing or sitting, pregnancy, and previous leg injuries or surgery.

Symptoms can vary in severity and may include aching or heaviness in the legs, especially at the end of the day, swelling (edema) in the ankles and feet, visible varicose veins or spider veins, skin changes such as discoloration or thickening, and in more advanced cases, venous ulcers. These ulcers are open sores that can be slow to heal.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination and a review of the patient's medical history. An ultrasound of the leg veins (venous Doppler) is often used to assess blood flow and the condition of the valves.

Treatment aims to manage symptoms, prevent complications, and improve blood circulation. Options include lifestyle modifications such as regular exercise, weight management, and avoiding prolonged standing or sitting. Compression stockings are a cornerstone of treatment, helping to support the veins and improve blood flow. Sclerotherapy or laser treatment may be used to address superficial varicose veins. In some cases, medication or surgical interventions may be considered. Early diagnosis and management are important to prevent progression and associated complications.
