The term is used in Finnish and German-speaking contexts and is equivalent to the English “background check.”

Typical elements of a taustakontrolle include identity verification, verification of education and work history, checks of criminal records where legally permissible, verification of professional licenses, and, depending on the role, checks of credit history, civil litigation records, or security-related data. In some cases, references and character assessments, as well as public or media information, may be reviewed. The scope is defined by the purpose of the assessment and the applicable laws.

Procedures commonly involve obtaining the individual's consent, collecting data from authorized sources, ensuring data accuracy, limiting data collection to what is necessary, and establishing retention periods. Individuals generally have rights to access their records, correct inaccuracies, and contest questionable findings. Many systems incorporate a human review to interpret results rather than relying solely on automated scoring.

Legal and ethical considerations include compliance with privacy and data protection laws, such as the European Union's GDPR and national regulations. These laws govern what information may be collected, how it may be used, how long it may be retained, and how individuals must be informed. There are often additional restrictions for sensitive data, and some jurisdictions limit or prohibit certain checks for specific roles, such as positions involving contact with children or vulnerable populations.
