Szövetanyagok, often translated as textile materials or fabrics, are flexible materials composed of a network of natural or artificial fibers. These fibers are spun into yarn or thread and then woven, knitted, felted, or otherwise processed to create a continuous fabric. The properties of a textile material are determined by the type of fiber used, the method of construction, and any finishing processes applied.

Natural fibers include those derived from plants, such as cotton and linen, and animals, such as wool and silk. Cotton is known for its softness, breathability, and absorbency, making it popular for clothing and home textiles. Wool provides excellent insulation and elasticity, commonly used for outerwear and blankets. Silk, a luxurious fiber, is prized for its sheen and smooth texture. Artificial or man-made fibers can be synthetic, like polyester and nylon, or regenerated, like rayon and modal. Polyester is durable, wrinkle-resistant, and widely used in clothing and upholstery. Rayon, derived from wood pulp, offers a soft drape and is often used as a silk substitute.

The construction of a fabric significantly impacts its characteristics. Weaving involves interlacing yarns at right angles, creating structures like plain weave, twill, and satin, each with distinct textures and strengths. Knitting uses interlocking loops of yarn to produce stretchy fabrics like those found in t-shirts and socks. Felting involves matting fibers together without spinning or weaving. Various finishing processes, such as dyeing, printing, bleaching, and applying special treatments, further modify the fabric's appearance, feel, and performance. These processes can enhance properties like water resistance, flame retardancy, or softness.
