Stakeholderhantering is the systematic process of identifying, analyzing, planning, and engaging with individuals or groups who are affected by or can influence a project, program, or policy. The goal is to balance diverse interests, secure buy-in, and reduce risk.

Core activities include identifying stakeholders, assessing their interests and influence, and mapping them using tools such as power–interest grids or salience models. A stakeholder register records roles, expectations, and communication needs.

Planning involves developing a stakeholder management plan and a communication strategy, defining engagement methods, cadence, and escalation paths. Implementation relies on ongoing dialogue, participation opportunities, feedback loops, and conflict resolution.

Monitoring and control track engagement outcomes and adjust strategies as the project evolves. Key outputs include the stakeholder map, stakeholder register, engagement plan, and formal communication artifacts. Metrics such as engagement level, satisfaction, and alignment to objectives help gauge success.

Applications span public, private, and nonprofit sectors, from product development to urban planning. For example, a municipal project may involve citizens, elected officials, and regulators; a software initiative may require input from customers, developers, and partners.

Challenges include conflicting interests, cultural differences, information overload, and maintaining transparency. Benefits include reduced resistance, smoother approvals, enhanced trust, and better decision quality.
