Schmelzglas
Schmelzglas is a term used in German-speaking contexts for a class of glass that melts or softens at relatively low temperatures and is used for enameling, glazes, and glass-fusing techniques. It is commonly sold as frits (glassy particles ground and sieved) or as ready-to-apply glazes that can be brushed or suspended in water for metal or ceramic surfaces. The defining feature is the presence of fluxing components that promote melting at temperatures lower than those required for ordinary soda-lime glass, enabling the formation of a durable, glossy surface upon firing in a kiln.
Composition and forms vary, but Schmelzglas typically contains fluxing oxides such as lead oxide, boron oxide,
Applications range from enamel coatings on metal surfaces (such as copper, silver, or steel) to ceramic glazes
Processing considerations include applying the frit as a paste, slurry, or powder, selecting a firing schedule
