The term is frequently applied to aromatic rings, especially benzene, but it also covers substitutions on non-aromatic rings such as cyclohexane or heterocycles.

In naming ring-substituted compounds, the substituent(s) are described as prefixes to the base ring name, with locants indicating the positions of substitution on the ring. For monocyclic benzene rings, standard descriptors include ortho (1,2-), meta (1,3-), and para (1,4-) in addition to numeric locants when multiple substituents are present. Substituents influence the chemical properties and reactivity of the ring.

Common examples include chlorobenzene, nitrobenzene, anisole, toluene, and xylenes. Substituted rings can carry electron-donating groups (e.g., alkyl, alkoxy) or electron-withdrawing groups (e.g., nitro, carbonyls), which affect reaction outcomes. Electrophilic aromatic substitution is a central class of reactions that forms ring-substituted products, with directing effects determining where new substituents add relative to existing ones. Steric hindrance and electronic factors both influence regioselectivity and reaction rates.
