nonaromatic

Nonaromatic describes molecules that do not meet the criteria for aromaticity. In organic chemistry, aromatic compounds are typically cyclic, planar structures with a continuous, conjugated π-electron system that follows Hückel's rule, (4n + 2) π electrons. Nonaromatic systems fail to satisfy one or more of these conditions: the ring may be noncyclic, not fully conjugated around the loop, or not planar; or the system may be saturated at several positions interrupting conjugation.

Nonaromatic is one of three categories used to describe cyclic conjugated systems; the other two are aromatic and antiaromatic. Antiaromatic compounds are planar, cyclic, fully conjugated with 4n π electrons, which leads to destabilization rather than stabilization. Nonaromatic compounds are neither highly stabilized by delocalization nor destabilized by it; they simply do not meet the aromatic criteria.

Examples include cyclohexane, a saturated, nonplanar ring that lacks continuous conjugation and therefore is nonaromatic. Cycloheptatriene is another nonaromatic example because its ring is not fully conjugated around the loop. In contrast, benzene is aromatic, and cyclobutadiene—if treated as planar and fully conjugated—would be antiaromatic.

Determination of aromaticity or nonaromaticity involves structural analysis of planarity and conjugation, examination of electron counts, and often computational or spectroscopic data. The term is a structural classification used to describe the presence or absence of the delocalized π-system that characterizes aromatic rings, as distinct from simply not being aromatic in everyday language.
