Reisemobile

Reisemobil, literally "travel mobile," refers to a motor vehicle that has been converted for living and traveling. In German-speaking countries the term covers motorhomes and camper vans used for holidays, long trips, and freelance living. They combine a driving cab with a habitable living area and are designed to be self-contained while on the move.

European Reisemobile come in several broad layouts. Kastenwagen: a van-based model with a compact living area, typically built on a standard van chassis. Teilintegrierte, or semi-integrated models, keep the cab visible while integrating living space over the chassis. Integrierte, or integrated models, merge passenger cab and living area into a single, continuous body often resulting in a larger interior.

Typical interiors include one or more berths, a kitchen with cooking facilities, a toilet and shower, and a dining area that can convert to sleeping space. Modern models include freshwater and wastewater tanks, onboard electrical systems with battery and mains connections, heating (gas or diesel), and sometimes solar panels for off-grid use.

The Reisemobil market is strongest in Europe, led by German manufacturers such as Hymer, Knaus, Dethleffs, Burstner, and Carthago, as well as numerous European brands and rental fleets. They are used for vacations, road trips, and mobile living, with configurations ranging from short weekenders to four-berth family layouts.

Regulatory and safety aspects vary by country but generally cover vehicle type-approval, weight limits, and driving licenses. Heavier models may require special licenses or training. Maintenance, insurance, and compliance with emissions and safety standards apply similarly to other motor vehicles.
