A motorhome is a self-propelled recreational vehicle that provides living quarters for travel and camping. Unlike a trailer or caravan, it integrates the driving chassis with a built-in living space, allowing people to move and stay in one vehicle. In North America, motorhomes are commonly categorized as Class A (bus-like), Class C (cabover with bunk), and Class B (van conversion). In Europe, similar vehicles are often called campervans or motor caravans.

A typical motorhome includes a sleeping area, kitchen, dining or lounge area, and a bathroom, with storage for gear and water, waste tanks, and an electrical system that may use the vehicle’s alternator, a dedicated battery bank, a generator, and sometimes solar panels. Layouts vary, with space-saving designs such as over-cab beds, compact kitchens, and slide-out sections that extend living areas.

Motorhomes are used for road trips, camping, and long-term travel. They offer independence, the ability to stay on-site at campgrounds or remote locations, and the convenience of having facilities on board. Disadvantages include higher upfront cost, ongoing maintenance, fuel use, and potentially complex licensing, insurance, and weight or length restrictions. Parking and maneuvering can be challenging in urban areas.

Development and markets: motorhomes emerged in the early 20th century and grew with leisure travel after World War II. Modern examples emphasize better insulation, safety features, more efficient power, and off-grid capabilities.

Regulations vary by country, including licensing, size limits, and safety standards, which influence design and ownership.
