Rehwild

Rehwild, commonly known as the roe deer in English, refers to the small European deer Capreolus capreolus. It is one of the most widespread wild ungulates in Europe and parts of western Asia. In some classifications, the Siberian roe deer (Capreolus pygmaeus) is treated as a separate species.

Adult roe deer are small compared with other European deer. They typically weigh about 14 to 25 kilograms, with males generally larger than females. The summer coat is reddish-brown, turning grey-brown in winter. A distinctive white rump patch is visible when the animal is alarmed or running.

Roe deer favor mixed and deciduous woodlands, forest edges, hedgerows, and farmland where cover is close to feeding sites. They adapt well to human-altered landscapes and often move along hedges and small woodlots. They are predominantly crepuscular, most active at dawn and dusk.

Diet consists of grasses, leaves, shoots, and fruit, with browsing also including bark and twigs during winter. They feed individually or in small groups and males (bucks) establish small territories during the mating season.

Reproduction occurs annually. The rut usually takes place in midsummer, July to August. After a gestation of about 9 to 10 months, fawns are born in late spring (May to June). Fawns are concealed by the mother for several weeks, then gradually join the doe’s group.

Conservation status is generally favorable, though local populations face pressures from habitat loss, road traffic, and hunting. Management often relies on regulated hunting quotas to maintain balanced populations.
