Regnskjerms

Regnskjerms are a type of fish in the family Osphronemidae, commonly known as gouramis. They are freshwater fish primarily found in Southeast Asia, including countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Cambodia. Known for their vibrant colors and unique behaviors, regnskjerms are popular among aquarium enthusiasts.

These fish typically have an elongated body shape and can display a variety of colors, including red, blue, and variegated patterns. They range in size from approximately 4 to 10 centimeters, depending on the species and environment. Regnskjerms are known for their territorial and often aggressive behavior, especially the males, which may display elaborate fins and vibrant coloration to assert dominance or attract females.

Regnskjerms are labyrinth fish, meaning they possess a special organ called the labyrinth organ that allows them to breathe atmospheric air. This adaptation enables them to survive in low-oxygen waters and makes them relatively hardy in captivity. They prefer warm, slow-moving waters with dense vegetation and hiding spots, mimicking their natural habitat within flooded forests, rice paddies, and slow streams.

In biological terms, regnskjerms are omnivorous, feeding on small insects, invertebrates, and plant matter. They are known for their ability to jump out of water, which helps them escape predators or move between water bodies.

In the aquarium hobby, regnskjerms are valued for their striking appearance and interesting behaviors. However, they require specific conditions, including warm temperatures around 24-28°C, pH levels between 6.0 and 8.0, and a habitat with plenty of plants and hiding places. Due to their territorial nature, they should be kept with compatible tank mates or separately to prevent aggression.
