Putzlagen

Putzlagen are the individual coats of plaster applied to a substrate in building practice to create a finished, protective wall surface. The term comes from the German words for plaster and layer and is used to describe the sequential layers that make up a plaster system.

In typical use, a plaster system is built up from multiple layers, often including an Unterputz (base coat), possibly one or more Zwischenputz (intermediate coats) for reinforcement or leveling, and an Oberputz (finish coat). The purpose of Putzlagen is to ensure bonding to the substrate, control moisture movement, adjust surface geometry, and provide the desired texture and appearance. In exterior applications, plaster layers also contribute to weather resistance and durability.

Materials used for Putzlagen vary by climate and substrate. Common options include lime-based plasters for vapor permeability and traditional contexts, cementitious plasters for higher strength and faster curing, and gypsum-based plasters for interior applications with controlled humidity. Adhesive or bonding plasters (Klebeputz) may be used to improve adhesion on smooth or non-porous substrates. Each layer’s composition influences properties such as rigidity, thermal behavior, and crack resistance, and layers may be reinforced with mesh or fibers where needed.

Application practices emphasize proper substrate preparation, appropriate layer thickness, and adequate drying between coats. Typical guidance reserves distinct thicknesses to prevent cracking and ensure sound bonding.
