Protsessikaevandamist, also known as process mining, is an interdisciplinary field that combines data science, process management, and business analytics to extract knowledge from event logs generated by information systems. The primary goal of process mining is to discover, monitor, and improve real processes by analyzing event data recorded during the execution of those processes.

Process mining bridges the gap between data science and business process management by providing insights into how processes are actually performed, rather than how they are theoretically supposed to be performed. It leverages event logs—collections of records containing information about executed process instances—which are often generated automatically by enterprise software systems such as ERP, workflow management, or customer relationship management systems.

There are three main types of process mining techniques: discovery, conformance checking, and enhancement. Discovery involves automatically constructing process models from event logs, allowing organizations to gain a clear understanding of their actual processes without relying on documented procedures. Conformance checking compares discovered process models against predefined models to identify deviations, inefficiencies, or compliance violations. Enhancement techniques use process models and event logs to predict future behavior, optimize processes, or suggest improvements.

Process mining is widely applied in various industries, including healthcare, finance, logistics, and manufacturing. In healthcare, for example, it can reveal bottlenecks in patient treatment workflows, while in logistics, it helps optimize supply chain operations. The technique is particularly valuable in complex environments where manual process documentation is outdated or incomplete.

Key challenges in process mining include handling noisy or incomplete event logs, scaling to large datasets, and ensuring interpretability of the resulting models. Advances in machine learning and big data technologies continue to address these challenges, making process mining a powerful tool for data-driven decision-making and continuous process improvement.
