Powerckt

Powerckt is a modular power electronics platform designed for rapid prototyping and education in embedded systems. The term blends "power" with ckt, an abbreviation for circuit. In its typical form, a powerckt system includes a backplane, plug-in power modules, and a control interface that together regulate and monitor electrical power for a load. The aim is to simplify assembly and testing of power stages.

Architecture and modules: A typical powerckt layout uses a backplane or carrier board for mechanical and electrical interconnections, a set of interchangeable modules (input protection, DC-DC converters, linear regulators, buffering stages, and inverters), and sensing and control blocks. Modules are designed for easy insertion with standardized pinouts for power rails, voltage sense, current measurement, and control signals. Protection features include fuses, overcurrent protection, undervoltage/overvoltage lockout, and thermal monitoring.

Control and interfaces: Regulation and telemetry are usually implemented by a microcontroller or processor module that communicates with power modules via common interfaces such as I2C, SPI, or PMBus. Some powerckt variants support programmable voltage rails, fault handling, and energy metering. Thermal and electrical isolation considerations are addressed through layout guidelines and, in higher-end versions, galvanic isolation between domains.

Applications and governance: Powerckt is used in education, laboratory prototyping, robotics, and small-scale industry where developers need quick iterations of power electronics without custom PCB fabrication. Because multiple groups define their own backplanes and module standards, compatibility varies between implementations, and the ecosystem is more collaborative than centralized.

History and usage notes: The concept emerged in open hardware and hobbyist communities in the 2010s and 2020s as a way to teach power electronics principles and accelerate hardware-in-the-loop testing.
