PowerSplit

PowerSplit is a term used in computing to describe the practice of partitioning a workload, data, or resource into units whose sizes follow powers of two (for example 1, 2, 4, 8). The goal is to improve predictability, cache locality, and parallelism by aligning data structures and tasks with hardware boundaries and memory hierarchies.

The concept emerges from parallel computing and computer architecture, where power-of-two block sizes align well with cache lines, page sizes, and SIMD units. PowerSplit is often applied in data layout, task scheduling, and memory allocation to create regular, stackable units that can be independently processed or transferred.

Mechanically, a problem is recursively split into halves, quarters, and so on, until a base unit is reached. Blocks are assigned to processing units (threads or cores) in a manner that promotes balanced load and locality. Data is laid out to ensure coalesced access and predictable strides, reducing cache misses and fragmentation. Dynamic variants adjust block boundaries at runtime to accommodate varying workloads while preserving the overall power-of-two structure.

Applications span high-performance computing, GPU rendering, streaming pipelines, and memory allocators. It is used to optimize parallel execution, improve data locality, and simplify addressing arithmetic. In memory allocators, for example, free lists organized by power-of-two sizes can speed up allocation and reduce fragmentation.
