Polyesterharts

Polyesterharts are a class of thermosetting polymers formed by crosslinking polyester resins with reactive hardeners to create rigid three‑dimensional networks. They are commonly referred to as polyester hard resins and are valued for their combination of chemical resistance, mechanical stiffness, and heat tolerance.

Chemistry and synthesis aspects commonly involve unsaturated polyesters derived from diols and dibasic acids, such as glycols and maleic anhydride. The polyester is cured by crosslinking with vinyl monomers (for example styrene) or with alternative crosslinkers, through a radical polymerization process that links polymer chains into a network. Some formulations use epoxy or isocyanate hardeners to tailor properties such as flexibility and adhesion.

Properties of polyesterharts typically include high modulus and good chemical and weathering resistance, along with the ability to withstand elevated temperatures when cured well. They can be formulated to be rigid or moderately flexible, but may exhibit shrinkage during cure and can be relatively brittle compared to other thermosets. UV stabilization and proper pigment or additive packages are often employed to improve outdoor durability.

Processing and applications encompass coatings, fiber‑reinforced composites, automotive refinishes, marine coatings, and construction laminates. Polyesterharts are applied by casting, spraying, or hand lay‑up and are cured by heat, room temperature, or a combination depending on formulation. They are favored for cost efficiency and relatively fast cure times, but require solvent management due to volatility in many resin systems.
