Hardeners are chosen to match the chemistry of the resin system and to control cure speed, temperature performance, and final properties.

In resin systems, hardeners work by reacting with reactive functional groups in the resin. For epoxy resins, common hardeners are amines or anhydrides that react with epoxide rings to create crosslinked networks. In polyurethane formulations, isocyanate-based hardeners react with polyols to form urethane linkages; the ratio and type of hardener influence flexibility, hardness, and cure time. Other systems use different curing agents or crosslinkers tailored to the resin chemistry and desired performance. Some formulations involve catalysts or accelerators to adjust the cure kinetics, while others require moisture or heat to activate the hardener.

Common types and examples include amine hardeners (various diamines and polyamines), anhydride hardeners (phthalic or hexahydrophthalic derivatives), and specialized crosslinkers for phenolic or silicone-based resins. In concrete technology, hardeners or densifiers are used to react with surface silica to form a harder, more wear-resistant layer.

Safety and handling are important, as many hardeners are reactive, exothermic, and moisture-sensitive. They are typically stored in sealed, labeled containers, kept away from moisture and incompatible materials, and mixed in prescribed ratios with the resin component to achieve the intended cure.
