Plectocomia

Plectocomia is a genus of climbing palms in the family Arecaceae, subfamily Calamoideae, commonly known as rattans. The genus is native to tropical Asia and the western Pacific, with species occurring from the Indian subcontinent through Southeast Asia to New Guinea and nearby islands. Roughly a dozen species have been described, though exact numbers vary among classifications.

Plants in this genus are slender climbers that lack large trunks. They produce long, flexible stems that ascend by leveraging modified foliar bases and, in some species, spines on leaf sheaths. Leaves are typically pinnate, bearing numerous leaflets along a central rachis. Inflorescences are slender and often pendant, bearing small flowers, and the fruits are drupes that ripen to colors such as orange, red, or black.

Ecology and habitat preferences vary by species, but Plectocomia palms commonly inhabit tropical forests, from lowland to foothill elevations, and are frequently found in canopy gaps, along streams, or in secondary forests where they can scramble over vegetation.

Taxonomy and relationship to other rattans place Plectocomia within the Calamoideae, a group of climbing palms adapted to a climbing life form.
