Planleggdocheckact refers to a cyclical approach for continuous improvement commonly known as the PDCA cycle (Plan-Do-Check-Act). The concept is used to test changes on a small scale, learn from results, and steadily improve processes. In Norwegian-language usage the phases are often rendered as Planlegg (plan), Gjør (do), Sjekk (check), Handle/Act (act). Some contexts also use Planlegg-Do-Sjekk-Handle or a related variant called PDSA (Plan-Do-Study-Act), where Study aligns with Check in terms of evaluation.

The cycle begins with Planlegg: identify a problem or opportunity, define objectives, determine success metrics, and design a change or experiment. Next is Do: implement the plan on a limited scale or pilot, collecting relevant data. In Check: analyze the results, compare outcomes to expectations, and assess any unintended effects. Finally, in Act: decide whether to adopt the change more broadly, adjust it and run another cycle, or abandon it and learn from the experience. This iterative loop fosters learning, reduces risk, and supports incremental improvements rather than large, untested changes.
