The term is used primarily in Dutch-speaking contexts to describe a specialist who translates design concepts into precise layout drawings and documentation. A planlayouter creates floor plans, site plans, urban layouts, and equipment or plant arrangements, adapting the output to the needs of a project and the requirements of the sector. They produce schematic layouts and, where appropriate, 2D drawings and 3D representations or BIM models. Their work focuses on space planning, circulation, dimensions, annotations, and scale, aiming to produce clear, buildable plans and drawings.

Responsibilities typically include developing layout concepts, refining space allocations, ensuring compliance with building codes, zoning regulations, safety and accessibility standards, and project standards. They coordinate with architects, engineers, clients, and contractors to gather requirements, review constraints, and incorporate feedback. Planlayouters manage revisions and prepare construction-ready documents, as well as as-built records when needed. They may also contribute to visualization and presentation materials for clients or stakeholders.

Tools and methods commonly used include computer-aided design (CAD) software such as AutoCAD, Revit, or ArchiCAD, along with BIM workflows and, in some cases, GIS tools for site planning. Drafting conventions, dimensioning, notation standards, and version control are integral to the role.

Qualifications vary but often include a vocational or associate degree in architectural technology, civil engineering technology, urban planning, or interior design, sometimes complemented by professional certification. Key skills encompass spatial awareness, attention to detail, knowledge of codes and standards, communication, and the ability to interpret specifications and coordinate with multidisciplinary teams.
