Drafting

Drafting is the process of preparing a preliminary version of a document or plan. The term also covers several related practices, including technical drawing, military conscription, and the selection of players for professional sports leagues.

In engineering, architecture, and manufacturing, drafting—often called technical drawing or draughting—is the creation of precise drawings that communicate dimensions, tolerances, materials, and assembly details. Traditionally done by hand with tools such as T-squares and compasses, it has largely transitioned to computer-aided design (CAD). Common outputs include orthographic projections, sectional views, and annotated dimensions, guided by standards from ISO or ASME.

In law and policy, drafting refers to composing texts such as contracts, bills, and regulations. A draft is circulated for review and revised before final approval or enactment.

In professional sports, the draft is a scheduled process in which teams select eligible players. The event assigns rights to players, typically organized into rounds and influenced by scouting, rankings, and eligibility rules. In the United States, for example, college players are commonly drafted into major leagues.

In a military context, the draft (conscription) is the compulsory enlistment of individuals into military service. Draft systems vary by country and period, with registration, eligibility criteria, and exemptions determining who serves.
