Planering

Planering is the process of deciding in advance how to use resources, time, and efforts to reach goals. It involves defining objectives, identifying required actions, estimating costs and timelines, and arranging the sequence of activities. The term derives from the word plan and the suffix -ering, reflecting its origin in Swedish and related Germanic languages.

Planering is applied in many domains, including project management, operations, logistics, event planning, and urban or regional planning. In urban planning, planering concerns the organization of land use, housing, transport, and environmental considerations, often within formal regulatory frameworks.

In Sweden and other Nordic countries, public planning is frequently guided by plans such as the översiktsplan (comprehensive plan) and detaljplan (detail plan) under national planning legislation. Public input, environmental assessment, and long-term sustainability are commonly integrated into the process.

The planning process commonly follows steps such as goal setting, information gathering, option generation, analysis and selection, implementation, and follow-up. Risk assessment and contingency planning are typical elements, and various tools—such as scheduling methods, cost estimation, and resource allocation models—support decision making.

Education and practice: planering is taught in disciplines such as business administration, engineering, architecture, and public administration. The term also contrasts with planera (the verb) and planning as a broader activity, including strategic planning, project planning, and urban planning.
