Piirimine, also known as "bordering" or "delimitation," refers to the process of establishing and defining the boundaries between two or more territories, regions, or administrative areas. This concept is widely applied in geography, politics, law, and cartography to clarify jurisdictional limits, ownership, or control over land.

The practice of piirimine dates back to ancient civilizations, where early societies marked territorial divisions for resource management, defense, or trade regulation. Over time, formalized systems of boundary demarcation emerged, often governed by treaties, legal agreements, or international conventions. Modern piirimine typically involves surveying, mapping, and sometimes negotiation between parties to resolve disputes or establish new divisions.

In Estonia and neighboring Baltic states, piirimine gained particular significance during the 20th century, particularly after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The redefinition of national borders following independence required precise demarcation to align with historical, ethnic, or administrative realities. For example, Estonia’s border with Russia was finalized in 2005 after decades of negotiation, incorporating adjustments based on pre-Soviet administrative divisions.
